UnityPoint Health – John Stoddard Cancer Center is expanding! We’re proud to announce the opening of a new medical oncology and hematology clinic, along with expanded chemotherapy infusion services, all located at our flagship center at 1221 Pleasant St., Des Moines.
This exciting growth includes the addition of three medical oncologists and two nurse practitioners, and we’re looking for compassionate, skilled Registered Nurses to join our team and help deliver exceptional, specialized cancer care to Central Iowa.

Responsibilities
- Answers questions and provides teaching as appropriate to scope and licensure or as directed by provider to patients and family members regarding health maintenance and medical illnesses
 - Documents appropriate information in the patient’s electronic chart. Complete patient forms and requests medical records/correspondence to be scanned into the electronic health record.
 - Schedule referrals for patients with specialist or outpatient as requested by the provider. Complete appropriate forms or requisitions needed for referrals or lab testing.
 - Assesses needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.
 - Assist provider with patient examination, procedures and emergencies.
 - Provide and document advice for home care of illness/condition conducting follow up phone calls regarding patient’s health and progress as directed by provider.
 - Perform diagnostic tests and laboratory procedures
 - Prepare and assist provider with patient examination, specimen collection, minor procedures and treatment of the patients, including administration of medication under direct supervision of the provider as appropriate to scope and licensure
 - Demonstrate knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately
 - Thoroughly understand testing (lab and procedures) values and relationship to patient status with accountability to take next steps as directed, and as appropriate to scope and licensure.
 - Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed customer expectations.
 - Understand inpatient and outpatient specialty procedures.
 - Responsible for compliance with precertification requirements.
 - Utilizes protocols to triage and address patient concerns and symptoms. Appropriately seeks direction from provider regarding illness related calls.
 - Maintain inventory for clinical supplies.
 
Education:
Graduate of accredited nursing program.
Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.
Experience:
Previous Oncology Experience Required.
License(s)/Certification(s):
Commitment to obtain OCN or seek oncology-specific continuing education within 2 years.
Maintain current licensure in to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.
Must maintain BLS
Oncology certification (OCN) preferred
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.
Multicultural sensitivity.
Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.
Other:
Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
